The Times is reporting this morning that new revelations about Alistair Darling’s expense claims have opened the door for Ed Balls to secure the job he’d love to have.
Mr Darling has been criticised for claiming allowances on two properties at the same time and for “flipping” four second home properties in four years. It is thought that if Darling is moved from the Treasury, he would be offered another top post, possibly as Home Secretary.
But Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman, said that the Chancellor had been caught with “his fingers in the till” and should go.
The news comes ahead of an imminent cabinet reshuffle, thought to be planned for after this week’s European elections.
