Speaking to The Sun today, Eddie Izzard says:
“I’m going to chuck in comedy in six years to go into politics. I’ve proved I can be determined and do things in a different way. And you need comedy in politics. There are lots of decisions to be made and people get bored talking about things that are only slightly different. It’s very dry so you need comedy to make it palatable… if you play gigs you earn money, which is good for someone who wants to run for Mayor.”
Izzard has made it clear in the past that he’d like to become a politician, and running as an MP or an MEP have both come up before as possible routes for the comedian. This is the clearest indication yet that the London Mayoralty is his aim.
However, if he quits comedy for politics in 6 years, it’ll be 2019, and by then we could have a Labour Mayor – as the next London Mayoral race is in 2016. That could make it difficult for Izzard to realise his dream in 2020, but if there wasn’t a Labour incumbent, he’d certainly be a very strong candidate for the Labour nomination – and the Mayoralty itself.
