Tories accused of “sleazy politics” over Umunna attack
“The Tories have been accused of “sleazy politics” after it emerged they were behind an attack on Labour star Chuka Umunna. Shadow Business Secretary Mr Umunna – a former DJ – had been targeted over old comments that some London nightclubs were “trashy”. Club owners complained in an open letter to a Tory-supporting newspaper yesterday but in a leaked email from Conservative Campaign HQ, it emerged the businessmen had been lobbied by David Cameron’s spin doctors. A Labour source said Mr Cameron owed Mr Umunna an apology. The source said: “This is the type of smear and sleaze politics that did a huge amount of damage to the Conservative Party in the past.” – Daily Mirror
Osborne’s 4G debacle to be investigated
“National Audit Office is to investigate the low amount raised by Ofcom’s auction of the 4G airwaves, which in June generated £2.3bn – a total of £1.2bn less than the Treasury had forecast, and £3bn less than the theoretical maximum. In a letter seen by the Guardian, the NAO’s auditor general, Amyas Morse, told the Labour MP Helen Goodman, shadow minister for media and communications: “I intend to conduct a value-for-money study of Ofcom’s recent auction of 4G spectrum.” – Guardian
