‘Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.’ – Bill Shankley
Last weekend, as Andy Murray celebrated his Wimbledon win and Alex Salmond waved his Saltire, the debate over whether politics and sport should mix emerged once again.
Tomorrow, LabourList will be helping to prove that they do, in fact, mix very well.
Most of you won’t know that we are now the shirt sponsors of the Labour-supporting football team Demon Eyes (who count Balls, Burnham, Purnell and David Miliband amongst others as former members). Coincidentally, ConservativeHome are the shirt sponsors for the Tory football team AFC Bluebirds.
Tomorrow these two teams face off in the ultimate political derby match. A proxy war between political opponents 22 months before the general election. The future of the nation may not be at stake, but political, sporting and blogging pride will be on the line.
Join us at the Market Road football ground (near Caledonian Road station in North London) at 2pm tomorrow to watch the game – and follow our Editor Mark Ferguson who will be tweeting live from the match using the hashtag #politicalderby.
A match report will follow on Sunday…
