Speaking to the Daily Politics this afternoon, Tessa Jowell said that she had yet to decide whether or not she’ll be running for London Mayor, despite mounting speculation that the outgoing Dulwich and West Norwood MP is planning a push for the Mayoralty. Jowell also cautioned other potential candidates from announcing too early, saying:
“I don’t think anyone should make up their mind until the other side of the election.”
So far the only confirmed candidate is transport expert Christian Wolmar, but others including David Lammy, Lord Adonis, Diane Abbott and Sadiq Khan are believed to be considering a bid for the biggest individual mandate in British politics in 2016. Jowell’s comments about candidates waiting to make up their mind echoes Khan’s rebuke to other mooted candidates back in December, when he told the New Statesman:
“I’ve got no interest in being involved in a beauty parade, or playing ego politics.”
Neither Jowell or Khan look likely to be announcing their candidacy any time soon – but will any of the other probable frontrunners take the plunge before May 2015?
