Does Labour have a “Get Clegg” strategy?

Labour HQ are plotting a “get Clegg” strategy for 2015, targeting his Sheffield Hallam seat in what they hope might be a “Portillo moment”/ Here’s how The Sun(£) are reporting it this morning:

“Clegg faces a desperate battle to stay in Westminster – after Labour launched a major bid to have him booted out of his seat at the next election. The party’s ruling National Executive Committee is “pouring resources” into Mr Clegg’s Sheffield Hallam constituency with the aim of overturning his 15,200 majority.”

“Details of the plan emerged as the Lib Dem leader talked up the possibility of a Coalition deal with Ed Miliband in 2015. Mr Clegg said Labour had “changed” and claimed the two parties could work together if no one wins an overall majority next year. But senior Labour sources say they are desperate to claim Mr Clegg’s scalp next year…One Labour source said beating Mr Clegg would be a “Portillo moment” – a reference to when Tory Cabinet minister Michael Portillo unexpectedly lost his seat in the 1997 Labour landslide.”

Clegg was 19,000 votes ahead of Labour in 2005, and Labour hasn’t even managed second place in the seat since 1979. But PPC Oliver Coppard will be hoping that a strong reaction on the doorstep – and rising Labour support in local polling – can take him into the Commons, and deliver a “Clegg moment”.

Update: A source in the know at Brewer’s Green says The Sun’s report is wrong:

“There is no Clegg strategy…it’s not a discussion we’ve ever had”

Clegg’s seat isn’t on Labour’s target seat list – and as resources are constrained it’d be hard to justify it being added. But even if there aren’t extra resources being sent to Sheffield Hallam, there may still be an influx of volunteers wanting to do their bit to take Clegg out…
