Dennis Skinner promises he won't go to the Lords in speech to Durham Miners' Gala

Dennis Skinner ruled out becoming a member of the House of Lords during a blistering speech to the Durham Miners’ Gala at the weekend. While defending trade unions’ right to strike from Cameron’s plans to bring in turnout thresholds, Skinner raised the point that the House of Lords remained unelected, before adding:

“And I’m not going there, so don’t worry. They’re not buying me off…”

Skinner, 84, has been MP for Bolsover since 1970 – yet shows no intention of retiring any time soon.
