We’ll know the results of the London Mayor contest later this morning, but if our weekly survey results are anything to go by, it’s going to be a close one: Tessa Jowell received 32% of the vote while Sadiq Khan got 31%.
If this result were to replicate itself later, then neither would win outright as candidates must have 50% or more of the vote to succeed. Last place Gareth Thomas (he received 2% of the vote) would be knocked out and his second preferences would be redistributed. It’s unclear which candidates would benefit from these second preferences. Regardless, this race looks close.
Not too far behind Jowell and Khan is Diane Abbott, who received 23% of the vote. As with the others, how Abbott will benefit from second preferences is unclear but among our readers she has come a lot closer to reaching the two frontrunners than either of the other candidates.
In third place is David Lammy with 8% of the vote, while Christian Wolmar – the only person standing to never have been an MP – received 5% of the vote.
2,996 people voted in this week’s survey. Thankyou to everyone who took part.
