Jeremy Corbyn wins Campaigner of the Year award

Corbyn ILF

Jeremy Corbyn has been awarded ‘Campaigner of the Year’ at the Spectator’s Parliamentarians of the Year Awards today.

Corbyn received the accolade for the nature of his unexpected landslide victory in the Labour leadership contest this summer, where he received 59% of the vote.

The Labour leader was not at the ceremony to receive his award personally, with Shadow International Development Secretary Diane Abbott picking it up on his behalf. As she received it, Abbott warned political commentators that it would be “unwise” to rule out a Corbyn victory in 2020, as they had before the leadership election.

There were other Labour winners too. Harriet Harman received a Lifetime Achievement award, Natasha Engel won Backbencher of the Year for her work as chair of the Backbench Business Committee, and Patricia Hollis was joint winner with Molly Meacher of Peer of the Year for their roles in the recent Government defeat over tax credits.
