Labour peers will “dearly miss” Lord Taylor who died after scooter crash

The 87-year-old Labour peer was involved in a collision with a van last Wednesday and he was subsequently rushed to hospital, where his condition was described as stable.

The former Blackburn council leader died this week, however, leading to tributes from his former colleagues.

Today Baroness Smith, Labour’s leader in the Lords, said: “Tom Taylor had a life long commitment to the Labour Party, through both local government and Parliament, and was held in high regard and with great affection by his party colleagues. He was also actively involved for many years in the education and higher education,” she said.

“Tom was a committed member of the House of Lords right through to the tragic circumstances which led to his death. We in the Labour peers group are very sad and will miss him dearly. And I’m sure many others around Parliament will miss him too.”

Taylor was born in 1929 and spent over two decades in Blackburn Town Council, winning a CBE for his service before being awarded a life peerage in 1978.
