Labour makes inroads into Tory poll lead

Labour has cut the Tories’ poll lead once again, according to a new study published tonight.

Jeremy Corbyn’s party hit 33 per cent, up one percentage point, in the Opinium survey for The Observer.

The Tories fell one point, to 46 per cent, meaning the poll handed the government a 13 point lead, down two compared to last week. The Tory lead was 19 points at the start of the campaign.

This is the third consecutive week that Labour has increased its popularity on Opinium’s measure.

The research was carried out between the launch of the Labour manifesto and the publication of the Tories’ policy offer. Theresa May could face a further hit to her party’s rating in the coming weeks after she announced a series of controversial cuts to pensioner benefits.

Conservative: 46 per cent (-1)

Labour: 33 per cent (+1)

Lib Dems: eight per cent (no change)

UKIP: five per cent (no change)

SNP: five per cent (no change)
