Opik – Clegg must go

March 5, 2012 10:36 am

In a new book on the future of the Lib Dems, “maverick” former Lib Dem MP Lembit Opik has called on Nick Clegg to step down as Lib Dem leader. Seemingly Opik has been carrying out “research” as he says:

“There’s no point in pulling our punches. After a year of research, [we] have concluded that Nick cannot realistically lead the party into the next election without incurring an additional contraction in the number of MPs – directly as a result of his leadership”

That’s hardly a shocking prognosis. I’d imagine most Lib Dems would realise that Nick Clegg is now a net negative to their party, following so many huge u-turns since the 2010 election. However Clegg probably shouldn’t be too concerned, Opik isn’t entirely focussed on bringing down his leadership – he also has another musical venture. Clearly enthused by the reaction to his music video, Lembit is planning to organise a music festival in Romania, called Woodstock East, headlined by the Cheeky Girls. Yes. You read that right. Opik told the Express:

“We want to create a new and original concert experience for the people of Romania, showcasing artists from across eastern Europe. It will take the best of Woodstock and Glastonbury multiplied by two.”

I don’t think Nick has too much to worry about…

I wonder why it is so many ex-politicians want to become “entertainers”?

We had Ann Widdicombe, Michael Portillo, Alistair Campbell’s music-hall turn (the one man show), now poor old Lembit and his brace of has-beens. How can he hope to be taken seriously?

He is probably right about Nick Clegg, but I doubt many will listen to him

This week, amid so much fear, hatred and confusion, let us not forget love

Life can come out and shock you. The events of yesterday are unimaginable. The family of the poor victim are in indescribable pain. Those who knew the men who have done these terrible things will also be suffering. They too are victims of this awful crime. Over the next few days and weeks we will see the best and the worst of humanity. As John Lydon once sang, anger is an energy. Well directed anger is healthy. We should be [...]

The chutzpah of Peter Mandelson – and why we need more trade unionists

Lord Mandelson, or Baron Mandelson of Foy, as he should be referred to since he was packed off to the House of Lords by a small cabal, recently accused the Unite union of ‘manipulating selection procedures’ in the Labour Party. He went on to warn Ed Miliband that this ‘stores up danger for a future Labour government’. Irony has always been in as short supply as sheer chutzpah has been plentiful with old Mandy – but since his faithful disciple [...]
