For months Salmond has been claiming he wants a TV debate on the future of Scotland – but with David Cameron, rather than the leader of the No campaign Alastair Darling. The not-so-subtle rationale is that Salmond would appeal more easily to a Scottish audience that a wealthy, southern English Tory. Salmond has today dropped his demand to debate Cameron (perhaps because time is running out for the Yes campaign) – and Darling has called his bluff.
The two will debate each other live on STV on July 16th.
That means the final months of the Scottish Independence campaign now have a big focal point – and it’s less than a month away…
