MPs who quit over Labour leadership among 20 appointments to frontbench

A series of Labour MPs who quit the frontbench in protest at Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership have returned to take up shadow ministerial posts.

Some, such as ex-shadow cabinet minister Gloria de Piero, are making their comeback to the frontbench while several other rebels took a job in October and were moved today.

Roberta Blackman-Woods and Karl Turner are among those who were re-appointed after Corbyn won a second leadership contest in September 2016 and have now taken on new shadow ministerial jobs.

 

DEFRA

David Drew – Stroud MP who represented the Gloucestershire seat between 1997 and 2010 before winning back the seat from the Tories last month.

Holly Lynch – Halifax MP who resigned as a whip in October last year, officially over family reasons, but was seen as close to Rosie Winterton, who Jeremy Corbyn had sacked as chief whip.

Home Affairs

Nick Thomas Symonds – Torfaen MP who resigned in June last year, saying there was a “very real risk” of a split under Corbyn’s leadership, but returned after the leader saw off the challenge of Owen Smith.

Chris Williamson – core Corbyn supporter who won back the Derby North seat on June 8, two years after it was lost to the Tories by just 41 votes.

Afzal Khan – new MP for Manchester Gorton who is quitting the European parliament.

Louise Haigh – Sheffield Heeley MP who last year backed the “no confidence” motion on Corbyn’s leadership.

Scotland

Paul Sweeney – new Glasgow North East MP who took the seat from the SNP.

Justice

Gloria di Piero – Ashfield MP who quit as shadow minister for young people and voter registration in June last year.

Imran Hussain – Bradford East MP who won his seat from the Lib Dems in 2015.

International Development

Roberta Blackman Woods – City of Durham MP who resigned in June last year but returned to the shadow housing team in the autumn.

Transport

Rachel Maskell – York Central MP who quit as shadow environment secretary over the three-line whip on article 50 vote in February.

Karl Turner – Hull East MP who resigned as shadow attorney-general in June but returned as a whip in October.

Treasury

Anneliese Dodds – new MP for Oxford East who is leaving the European Parliament, where she represented south east England.

Housing

Tony Lloyd – ex-MP and former police and crime commissioner for Greater Manchester who came back to the Commons in Rochdale last month.

Melanie Onn – Great Grimsby MP who resigned as shadow deputy leader of the House in June last year.

Women and equalities

Carolyn Harris – Swansea East MP who was elected in 2015 and then joined the frontbench last year.

Defence

Gerald Jones – Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney MP who was elected in 2015 and served on the Welsh team from October last year.

Local Government

Yvonne Fovargue – Makerfield MP who quit as shadow business minister in June last year and held a series of frontbench posts under Ed Miliband.

Education

Tracey Brabin – Batley and Spen MP who becomes shadow minister for early years.

Wales

Chris Ruane – Vale of Clwyd MP who was a whip under Ed Miliband.
