There have been two more polls in Scotland over the past day, showing very little to be optimistic about for the Labour Party – in both Scottish Labour trail the SNP by over 20 points.
Yesterday’s Panelbase poll gave the SNP a lead of 21 points, while Labour have dropped two points with the pollster. Their results were:
SNP 48%, Labour 27%, Conservatives 16%, Lib Dems 4%, UKIP 3%, Green 2%
Today’s TNS poll, meanwhile, spells even worse news for Labour as SNP extend their lead to 32 points:
SNP 54%, Labour 22%, Conservatives 16%, Lib Dems 6%, UKIP 2%, Green 2%
This TNS poll could leave Labour with only a single seat in Scotland. However, there is very little stability in the Scottish polls – while all of them show a very large lead for the Nationalists, there is no clear picture of what things will look like on May 7th. If there is any slight silver lining for Scottish Labour, that is it.
The Guardian report today that Unite general secretary Len McCluskey has refused to attack the SNP, citing overlap between the trade union and the party on many policy issues:
“It would be wrong of me to launch an attack against the SNP who have a manifesto that is anti-austerity, which is Unite’s policy, and many of the issues that they talk about are in line with the policies of my membership.”
However, in a recording on The Sun’s website, McCluskey can be heard saying of Scottish politics:
“The only guarantee of getting rid of the Tories is by voting Labour.”
This has not stopped the paper bizarrely running the story as proof that McCluskey backs a deal with the SNP. No, we’re not sure how the came to that conclusion either.
