Jeremy Corbyn doesn’t have the election “all sewn up”, says Yvette Cooper

Yvette Cooper

Yvette Cooper will today say that Jeremy Corbyn doesn’t have the leadership election “all sewn up”.

In a speech to party members in Plymouth the leadership contender will warn against “hubris” of those who think they’ve won, and “defeatism from those who believe we need another way”.

The Shadow Home Secretary will argue that there is still all to play for in the leadership election.  “To listen to some you would think the leadership election was all sewn up. That Jeremy had won. It isn’t. He hasn’t. The power to choose the future of our party and our country lies in all our hands right now”, she will say.

Polls suggest Corbyn is the frontrunner in the leadership contest. In a clear bid to position herself as the candidate who could beat the Islington North MP Cooper will say that Labour need “real hope, not false promise”.

She will also warn members and supporters about paying too much attention to the polls, saying “Don’t write our party off based on some close polls. Surely May 8th taught us a bit of scepticism about poll results. Don’t think it’s a done deal because of the bookies odds.”

Cooper will set out her leadership stall while offering a critique of Corbyn’s plans. On the economy she will say Labour need a “real alternative” to George Osborne’s plans, and “not just printing money we haven’t got” – a criticism of Corbyn’s people’s quantitative easing plans.

She will argue that under her leadership “family and feminism” would at the heart of Labour’s approach to the economy.
